It a try at hand drawn typography. I have made a A4 card for my girlfriends birthday. I got something back from her too.

It was first hand drawn on paper, later redrawn with calligraphy pens, “scanned” (well, I took a picture) and redrawn in Illustrator CS6 in vector shape.

This is a fucking chair. Period.

Design of the year

This collection has been designed with modern lifestyle and different consumer habits in mind. Its minimalist design follows the Look&Feel philosophy, and makes full use of quality materials that are 100% degradable and re-usable.

Good response from the market has allowed the story to continue further into other segments of consumers lives. People enjoy being different and living among beautiful, useful products. The use of plastics as a raw material suggests a change in trends characterising what used to be the ceramics segment, CUISINE Viva has been designed for those among us who think in the future tense.

My comment:

I love the colours. After Nokia started using bright colours with its Nokia N9, it became quite a trend. Although the colours are not the same. I love different and strong “dishes”, but I never use it. The plastic is a good material for using it for glasses and other things. I would definitely buy those, when I will need it.

Design of the year

Lounge chair YO follows the ergonomic principles of comfortable and pure geometric lines that abstractly “YO”.

It creates a contrast between massive, “male” wooden construction and a light, transparent “female” composite cloth of the seat and back, made of 100% recycled material. The tension of the cloth is achieved by the interweaving of fibres (the so-called “corset”). The lounge chair is complemented by a stool that becomes a side table when rotated 90°. A range of colour choices allows them both to easily fit into interiors of various styles.

My comment:

I do not know what to comment on this product. When I first saw it, I thought it was horrible. Terrible. Maybe even ugly and “unfunctional”, but a chair should be functional. I didn’t like the “thing” at all. With all respect for Rok, but it just isn’t my style. Later on, when seeing it few more times, my opinion changed a little, but I still do not think this should be worth the prize. I am sure the jury took everything in consideration and they have chosen the right products, after all, we architects are people with million tastes. So, I said it all I think of it, I believe it will make some nice chair for a nice and suitable interior, but not mine.

Design of the year

The factory Stol (meaning chair) from Kamnik was once a symbol of top-end Slovenian design. At the end of two decades of sustained hardship, however, it was fortunate to manage to hold on its core skills and technical expertise.

This project of a new office and side-chair collection for public spaces was based on a general modernization of the company’s product line - necessary if the company was to re-establish itself on the office chair market. The main design brief objectives included natural materials, high quality parts, use of existing Stol tools for all products, and ergonomically agreeable seating experience.

Different cutting, rotations of wooden shells, and thoroughly thought-out joints made a totally new collection possible through relatively small investment.

My comment:

Well, this is something I like more that the EYEN / Carbon light that got the first price. There is a saying: you are not a real architect until you have designed and manufactured your own chair. I do not think that this is true, well, not anymore. We all have different qualities, and so, I don’t really see the reason behind the obsession with chairs. I am not saying I do not like those. I think they are nice and they really represent the company itself and its struggle to come on top again and I think they made it. Those are some really nice chairs here. The use of hidden joints and rotation of wooden shells is just right. I would love to buy one for my “business”.

Design of the year 2012 - First Prize: Eyen / Carbon light

Report of the jury

The expert jury of Prof. Dr. Stane Bernik, Associate Prof. Janez Smerdelj, Jelena Leskovar, Maja Tasič Demšar and Lenka Bajželj, jury president, has studied 15 entries for the Design of the Yeat 2012 award. In the course of deliberations, it found that this year’s body of entries is even better than last year’s; and that the entries, individually and collectively, are becoming ever more representative, are becoming ever more representative of Slovenian design - including the many issues with which it is dealing today.

A total of 9 out of 15 entries stood out, with the jury members determining, unanimously, that the Design of the Year 2012 award be given to Janez Mesarič of studio asobi for his design of Eyen / Carbon Light modular lighting.

Eyen lighting represents an excelent industrial product, technologically designed to adapt to different spaces. Its design and carbon technology allow organic growth of the product, adopting various forms that follow their desired function within the given space.

Studio asobi developed the Eyen / Carbon Light in collaboration with Intra Lightning. It features the latest technology, as the feather-light carbon fibre body links highly efficient powered LED spots. The adaptable design and a variable number of LED spot options ensure optimum illumination of each surface without IR and UV radiation together with excelent colour reduction. Its outstanding design, main-tenance-free operation, highest quality materials and excellent performance enhance any high-end environment.

My comment:

I do see many hours spent on the choosing of the material, I can see the work and ideas involved in this project. But I do not see the project as the winning one. We will review some of those 15 designs here too, but some will be left out, so we will never know what kind of other project could win. Back to this one. As I said, I do se the “whish” to create something. It is new, it is functional, it is light and everything, but in my opinion, I think it is “ugly”. Not ugly as Ugly Betty (although she is quite a nice woman without her ugly makeup), but ugly in a design way. It looks like sliced out of a “feather-light carbon fibre” plate and left with marks of slicing on the side. I can see this installation in little interiors, and even in those, an investor must probably have a bag of cash too purchase one of those.
